Facebook Following Google’s Lead on Server Hardware

In April Google discussed some details about its custom server design with CNET. One of the interesting things revealed was that the custom power supply setup allowed a low cost 12-volt battery to provide battery backup to the server. The battery connects directly to the power supply removing the need for UPS and PDU equipment.

In a November 17 Tech Talk Amir Michael of Facebook gave a talk explaining the future use of Google’s power model and hopes that openness in the architecture will also benefit the rest of the industry.
